Thousands of people have enjoyed visiting Versatile Homes showhomes elsewhere throughout the country over the years, and now it’s Tauranga’s turn, and Tauranga born and raised franchise holders Garry and Luanne Bettelheim are thoroughly looking forward to showing off their classic, timeless showhome.

Number 81 Te Ranga Memorial Drive is where 222 square metres (make that 240 if you include the covered, alfresco area) of this lodge-inspired show home sits upon a beautifully landscaped 481 square metre site.  Tauranga’s Michelle McDonnell is the landscape designer who has ensured the planting plan fully compliments the home.

Street appeal is important to the Versatile brand, and this Tauranga offering is a case in point. Both the internal and external colour palette favour black, whites and greys, while the exterior product is a combination of linear board, and aerated concrete panel with a Rockcoat textured plaster finish. Natural riverstones - used on pillars flanking the deck, on the wide chimney panel stretching up from ground level, and on the letterbox - elevate the home’s visual appeal.

Called The Lakes Lodge, the home has been created with timeless and inviting ambiance in mind. Combine that with design focused on suiting modern family living and you have a taste of what’s on offer at this address. As befitting a lodge-inspired home, the house features eye-catching inclusions such as a barn door, board and batten and tongue and grove detailing, timber laminate flooring and a traditional kitchen (by MasterCraft).

The Lakes Lodge is a four-bedroom home with double garaging.  The family living space is a highlight and in this hub of the home, Luanne and Garry have opted for a high stud of 2.7 metres.  The sense of space is further accentuated by north-facing walls of glass in both the open plan living area, and the formal lounge divided by the sliding barn door.  The glass walls are stacker doors, providing generous access at walk-out level to the covered, alfresco dining area with its cosy outdoor fireplace.  Warmth is no issue at this abode, as there’s also a gas fire in the formal lounge, and a heat pump in the open-plan living area.  Plus, the home has been built to maximise the sun, with the master bedroom also north-facing.

The blend of open plan and formal living spaces are well suited to provide the scale and scope required to host any and every occasion.  A separate laundry and toilet, as well as bathroom and en suite, ample storage, and a kitchen that includes a scullery, ensures the home is as functional as it is warm and inviting.

Quality fixtures and fittings are prevalent in this home. These product choices, combined with décor touches, ensure there is a sense of luxury and elegance. For example, while Luanne and Garry have selected Resene’s Seafog (double strength) on the walls throughout the house, they have included feature walls of wallpaper and tiles in various parts of the home. In the home’s entranceway, for example, black, white and silver striped wallpaper immediately indicates to visitors that this is a home with style. It’s a feeling repeated in the home’s bathrooms – arguably among the most arresting areas.

While Garry and Luanne made some cost-effective shower and vanity choices, the inclusion of a free-standing bath, glossy black cabinetry, and embossed floor-to-ceiling black tiles lend the room stunning status. (The en suite’s tiling is a grey and white version of the bathroom’s black ones). Luanne tells how a classic black and white feature bathroom was always on her must have list.

“I didn’t want a monochromatic bathroom. I think what we have done here shows how you can raise the bar and how a small amount of luxury can add luxury to the whole room,” she says.

Strong attention to detail has also been paid to technological aspects of the home. Wall sockets incorporate USB points, and the heat pump and garage door feature remote control benefits. For example, the heating can be turned on from afar ensuring a warm home upon arrival, and wifi connectivity enables the home owner to check the garage door has been closed.

Garry and Luanne, who are both very proudly local, have enjoyed dressing the house to suit its Tauranga base. Black and white photos depicting Tauranga from days of old adorn a living room wall and they commissioned a special flag that hangs in the entrance. It’s reminiscent of the NZ flag, but with the inclusion of Mauao.
